Panama Property to Benefit from Sustained Growth
24-7PressRelease - NOTTINGHAM, UK - The Panama government has just extended its tax-exemption law for retirees, which were due to expire next year. Panama is currently the foremost destination for American retirees, and the Panama government is, understandably keen to ensure this continues. Panama is regarded as being the American version of what popular parts of Spain -- i.e. the Costas -- are to Britons.

In other words Panama is an incredibly popular tourism destination with Americans, and increasingly, those from around the world, not least those in search of bargain cosmetic surgery. This means, that, given the size of America's population compared to that of Britain; the potential profit to be made from Panama property in the coming years is absolutely huge.

Rental yields on prime Panama property are already huge, holiday apartments are readily fetching yields of not less than 10%, and even up to 18% is possible on the smaller units in the best areas.

Speaking of smaller units in the best areas; studio apartments on David Stanley Redfern's Bala Beach development are currently available from 43,000. The Bala Beach development consists of 850 units covering some 20 acres of gorgeous Panama coastline. 1 and 2 bedroom apartments are also available.

Panama exploded onto the international property investment scene when the canal expansion plan was announced in 2005. The Panama Canal is central to the Panama economy, as is the Colon Free Trade Zone. The Canal has gone over its capacity, and over the capacity given by previous minor expansion attempts, and has become too small for many of today's larger ships.

The major expansion, due to be completed in 2014, will not only double its capacity, but triple or even quadruple its revenues, as it allows bigger ships and more cargo to pass through it.

Panama's economic growth is already strong, and the completion of the Canal expansion will give Panama's economy a new lease of life, and will likely turn it into one of the largest economies in South America, if not the world.

Where To Get Quality Health Care In Panama City, Panama
By Rebecca Tyre

Panama is famous for a lot of things but many people don’t realize just how great health care is in Panama. Panama has two health care systems - public and private. The public institutions are run by the Caja de Seguro Social (Social Security System). Working Panamanians have a set amount deducted from their paycheck, in return they receive free health care and prescription medication from hospitals and clinics within the Social Security System.

The health care is good in the public system, but foreigners and Panamanians with extra money usually opt for insurance with the private hospitals. The most popular private hospitals in Panama City are:

Hospital Punta Pacifica - the only Johns Hopkins associated hospital in Central America. This hospital is NICE! Located in Punta Pacifica, this is probably the most expensive in Panama, but if you have the money (or private insurance) it’s a great bet. Most of the doctors practicing here speak English. Walking through this hospital you get the feeling that you are in an upper end hotel as opposed to a hospital.

Clinica Hospital San Fernando - Located on Via Espana in Panama City, San Fernando hospital is another great choice for health care. The rooms are clean and nice and the staff is very friendly. San Fernando Hospital is affiliated with the Miami Children’s Hospital, Tulane University and Miami’s Baptist Health Center. This was Panama’s first private hospital and has a great track record and state of the art technology. San Fernando is also about to open a clinic in Coronado, a tourism and vacation hot spot on Panama’s Pacific Coast. You can easily find English speaking doctors in both locations.

Hospital Nacional
- Hospital Nacional began as primarily a women’s hospital more than 35 years ago. It is now an 80 bed facility with more than 100 specialists working out of it. At Hospital Nacional, the nurse to patient ratio is one nurse to 10 patients. The hospital is located in Bella Vista on Ave Cuba. Hospital Nacional accepts international health care plans as well as ambulatory and emergency care for US veterans.

Centro Medico Paitilla - Located in Punta Paitilla, this is one of Panama’s oldest private hospitals and a favourite among wealthy Panamanians. Expect the majority of doctors here to speak English. The hospital is probably best known for it’s state of the art oncology unit. The website for the hospital is under construction, so don’t expect to get too much information from it.

Most larger towns in Panama’s interior provinces also have private and public hospitals, but for the most part are smaller than the ones in Panama City and it can be difficult to find a doctor that speaks English.

Related Group, Orient-Express Plan Partnership
Orient-Express Hotels said it has signed a letter of intent to establish a strategic partnership with Miami-based Related Group to develop hotels and residences in South Beach; Cartagena, Colombia; and Panama City, Panama.

Orient-Express said the proposed strategic partnership plans to develop and operate multi-use projects that will include hotel, branded residential and commercial components. The letter of intent between the companies contains a 90-day exclusivity period and is non-binding until detailed negotiations are completed.

Orient-Express said the initial projects are expected to open within three years. They are to include a hotel with 28 luxury residences in South Beach; an oceanfront hotel in Cartagena, close to the old walled city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site; and a hotel on Avenida Balboa in Panama City, part of a major city-led waterfront development project. In each case, the hotel will be part of a wider development and will be managed by Orient-Express Hotels.

"As a leading developer of high-end condominiums in the United States and Latin America, we recognize Orient-Express as the ideal partner to bring a fresh, unparalleled cachet to our unique, luxury properties in South Beach, Cartagena and Panama City," Related Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Jorge M. Perez said in a news release. "Related will continue its critically acclaimed success collaborating with world-renowned architects and designers to create landmark projects in global destinations. And now, with Orient-Express contributing the most luxurious experience in accommodations and customer service, together we can offer our customers a lifestyle that sets new standards in class and quality."

The South Beach project will bring the number of Orient-Express properties in the U.S. to eight.

Semi-retired North American Pilots are Loving Life in Panama
By Jacob Ehrler - The Visitor Panama

A shortage of qualified local airline pilots has driven Copa Airlines to look outside of Panama to meet the increasing demands that their regional growth is making on the airline. They have found their answer in retired pilots from the United States. The Visitor ran into a few of these chaps at a recent social mixer and spoke with them about their new jobs, Panama and why they chose to come here.

“We could go anywhere, really. But to be honest, the women are the real draw for us so-called retired pilots.” said Rene Triay. Once pilots turn 60, they are no longer eligible to work in the US and many choose to step out into the world market instead of settling into retirement. The “Copa Gringos”, as they have coined their pack of 18 pilots who are staying at a Balboa Avenue waterfront building while they go through rigorous flight simulation training with Copa, all have similar reasons for selecting Panama.

“I am here because of the proximity to home. I don’t mind living outside of the States, but it’s just too far away when you consider living in other markets like the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Plus there is a good standard of living here.” said Ed Dutra.

“Nah! He’s really looking for the next Mrs. Dutra!” joked another pilot, “That’s why he’s here – Latina women!”

The jovial group of guys wouldn’t spill the beans on their exact salary. But they did confess that they do not have to work full time either. And combined with their US airline pensions, they’re probably doing alright in Panama.

Apart from the 18 pilots in the Avenida Balboa group there are another 42 foreign pilots working for Copa Airlines, all North American retirees and more are said to be on the way to Panama.

“Of course, Copa has Panamanian pilots, and they are training more of them. But they just cannot produce them fast enough to keep up with the demand,” said one of the Copa Gringos. “So we have this unique opportunity to work and live in this enjoyable country.”
