Panama - an ideal place to invest
|
It is a known fact that despite much of the economic crisis suffered throughout Latin America, Panama's economy has increased in recent years. And because of Panama's open economy, it allows to offer the lowest tariffs in the region, which has increased foreign investment in several public and private sectors.
Panama also offers to investors no restrictions on 100 per cent foreign-owned companies - non-resident Panamanian International Business Corporations (IBC's) and Private Interest Foundations do not pay tax on any of their income derived from abroad. In addition, no restrictions on mergers, acquisitions or joint ventures, total absence of exchange controls and very flexible company laws. There is also no risk in currency exchange since Panama's circulating currency is the US Dollar, and Panama has no currency exchange controls or currency restrictions so funds can flow in and out of the country freely.
Another great incentive for investors is the equal treatment of foreign and local citizens. The Investment Stability Law (Law No. 54 of July 22, 1998), guarantees all foreign and national investors equal rights in terms of investments and business practices, continuing Panama's long-standing policy of providing a foreign-investment environment that requires no special authorizations, permits or prior registration.
Real estate prices in sleepy rural towns like Boquete -- which AARP's Modern Maturity magazine named one of the world's best places to retire -- have risen to a high level as developers build high-end development communities like Valle Escondido and golf-courses. Other places like Bocas del Toro and restored buildings in Panama City's historic Casco Viejo have also seen prices move up in dramatic fashion, drawing the attention of foreigners. But despite the price increases, properties in Panama remain only a fraction of what someone would pay for similar real estate in the United States. Not to mention that with a 20-year suspension of property taxes to those who build houses or renovate in a historic district, and an income tax hiatus for those starting some small businesses, the opportunities for entrepreneurs and for those seeking a place to retire are very appealing.
Taking in considertion all these facts, it is hard not to say that Panama is an ideal place to invest.
