Advantages of having a second citizenship in Panama
|
Second citizenship in countries like Panama offer many advantages. The most common advantages involve freedom of travel between countries, lower taxes, privacy in personal and business affairs, and asset protection. For United States citizens, the list of advantages also includes the ability to travel to Cuba freely and other “prohibited” countries.
Many people also feel more comfortable traveling with a Panamanian passport over a U.S. or U.K. passport, given varying political climates across the globe. No country has a quarrel with Panama.
Many “Zonians”, US citizens who were born in the former U.S. Canal Zone who are dual U.S. and Panama citizens, use their Panama passports when traveling outside of the United States.
Obtaining second citizenship, also called “dual citizenship” in Panama can be accomplished under five of Panama’s immigration Visas.
These five ways lead towards naturalization, citizenship and a Panama passport.
- Self Economic Solvency Visa requiring a minimum investment of $300,000 either by purchasing a Certificate of Deposit with a Panama bank or purchasing Panama real estate or doing a combination of the two investments.
- Small Business Investor Visa: requiring a minimum $160,000 investment in an existing Panama business or creating a new one with a minimum of five Panamanians employed full time paid at least minimum wage and paying their social security benefits. In addition, obtain a commercial business license and register with the social security administration.
- Large Reforestation Visa: requiring a minimum investment of $80,000 and the purchase of at least five hectares in a certified reforestation project.
- Marrying a Panamanian: gives instant permanent residency.
- Refugee after living in Panama for ten years: people can apply for permanent residency and then another five years before qualifying for naturalization.
Upon qualifying for the first four of these visas, you must be a temporary resident for two years before applying for permanent residency. After being a permanent resident for five years, you can apply for naturalization, become a citizen and then apply for a passport.

Panama City: New Aerotropolis in the Works
|
By Jessica Ramesch - International Living
If you’ve ever been to Panama, chances are, you remember how easy it was to fly here. For many an expat resident, the Tocumen International Airport is a big draw. Known as the Hub of the Americas, the busy airport is a connections hub, providing easy travel to and from anywhere in the region.
The hub and the Panama Canal also make Panama a prime destination for entrepreneurs or multi-nationals looking to expand within the region.
Recently, local news sources have announced that some 344 hectares around Tocumen are to be converted into Panama’s first aerotropolis, featuring logistics, commercial and residential sectors.
An aerotropolis is an airport-anchored city of sorts, with all the features of a modern metropolitan center, says John Kasarda, director of the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise at UNC-Chapel Hill and a “leading developer of the aerotropolis concept.”
An aerotropolis boasts office buildings, hotels and exhibition complexes, medical and wellness facilities, cultural, leisure, and entertainment venues, retail, education, financial and consumer services.
“It is a globally connected city,” says Kasarda, “where long distance travelers and locals alike can work, shop, conduct business, exchange knowledge, meet, eat, sleep, and be entertained…without going more than 15 minutes from the airport.”
Dubbed Panatropolis, the “new world’s global hub,” the mixed-use development would also be an air logistics center, providing speedy, efficient logistical solutions to time-critical industries—such as high-tech and perishables companies. Says Kasarda, “The airport will become a magnet for high-value time critical to businesses and industry, complementing and reinforcing commercial development in Panama City’s downtown.”
According to news sources, the project will generate an estimated 3,000 direct jobs. Investors plan to funnel $412 million into the project; construction should take between five and 15 years.
According to local daily the Panama America, investors also say the project will be “the most innovative logistics platform in the region.” Quite a statement, considering the fact that a new city and logistics hub is growing in Panama Pacifico, on the western edge of Panama City.
Says Kasarda: “The location of Panatropolis is particularly favorable; right next to an international airport that is among the most strategically located in the Americas, with a hub carrier, Copa, that is among the fastest-growing and most successful airlines in the world. This will provide Panatropolis with the best overall access to Central, South, and North America.” Not only that, says Kasarda, but the project will also give Panama “a huge competitive edge.”

The Hidden Delights Of Panama
|
| By Tyler Ramos - Panama in Sight

The country of Panama has an abundant variety of attractions to entertain and fascinate any visitors who make their way to its land. From the stunning coasts to the high mountain peaks in the Chiriqui province, the country is now becoming a popular destination for travelers from all over the world.
The vast array of different plants and animals is reflected in the name of the country, the word Panama means an abundance of fish, trees and butterflies and is a true description of the natural wonders of this small country. With so many unique examples of flora and fauna it is not surprising that science views the rainforests as an exciting opportunity to find new medicines. Many visitors find that bird watching is also a rewarding experience with many rare birds being located within the forest regions.
The town of Volcan is one of the three towns surrounding the Baru volcano. Cerro Punta and Boquete are also nearby with Boquete being a popular destination for tourists wishing to visit the highest point in the country. With an abundance of underground springs, the Chiriqui province is an idyllic location for a relaxing getaway. Waterfalls and forests surround the towns and offer tourists a beautiful location to explore.
The Chiriqui province boosts the highest mountain in the country; standing over the surrounding countryside Mount Baru has not had a major eruption since 500CE. Smaller eruptions were recorded around one thousand years later and occasional recent earthquakes demonstrate that the volcano is still a potential threat although dormant at the moment.
As Panama inhabits the isthmus between Central and South America a person standing at the top of Mount Baru will have an unbelievable view. Standing at over 11,000 ft high, the mountain top offers a view of both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean on a clear day, creating an unforgettable memory. The volcano enriched soils surrounding Mount Baru means the city of Volcan is rich with produce. Abundant plant life surrounds the region and the largest rainforest outside of the Amazon basin can be found nearby.
The variety of different regions in Panama has led to a development in adventure holidays. The Chiriqui province entices thrill seekers with the exciting hikes up volcanoes and thick rainforest treks. The Coral reefs in the sea are a draw card for scuba divers, and the abundant waterways are a must for a canoeing adventure. The country offers excitement in many ways and is a thrilling destination for an action packed holiday.
The province of Chiriqui was originally discovered in 1519 and was initially a part of Columbia. Chiriqui officially became a province of Panama in 1849 and the sustainability of the area made it a preferred location for the colony of freed slaves, Linconia that was proposed by Abraham Lincoln.
Panama is proud of its climate, year round stability means it is a comfortable location for many visitors to visit. With daily temperatures averaging around 90 degrees Fahrenheit and dropping to a balmy 70 degrees at night the country is a pleasant place to visit. On occasion the cooler mountain region has reported a small flurry of snow, this is a rare sight and one to be treasured.

Free Stop Over trips in Panama for travelers in transit at Tocumen
|
Panama will launch an international campaign targeting passengers in transit at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City. It will be called “Stop Over”, and will offer passengers in transit on Copa Airlines flights the opportunity to have a vacation in Panama without having to pay a fee for their collecting bags and checking back in at the counter a few days later.
Currently, Copa Airlines does not charge for this service, but the policy has not yet been promoted. About 2.5 million people take connecting flights through Tocumen each year.
The Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) Administrator Salomon Shamah has closed the deal with Copa and now the ATP has moved on to negotiate with tour operators and hotels in order to offer three and four day packages at special rates.
The ATP also reported that a separate campaign will be launched in the US to promote Panama as a congress and convention destination. The main benefit for companies is an arrangement that allows US companies to write off the cost of the conference in Panama from their US taxes.

Free insurance for all tourists visiting Panama
|
Starting January 15, all visitors arriving at Tocumen International Airport in Panama will be covered by a state-appointed free health insurance policy for 30 days. This new measure is expected to increase Panama’s competitiveness as a destination, according to Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) Administrator Salomon Shamah.
Each visitor will be given a pamphlet containing an identification card for beneficiaries. This card must be presented together with a passport if a visitor needs medical care. The coverage will be voided if a visitor is injured while consuming drugs or under the influence of alcohol. Extreme sports and natural phenomenon are also excluded.
The contract with Generali is for three years and has a total cost of $12 million. The benefits will cover accidental diseases (not pre-existing) within 30 days of a visitor’s stay in Panama, hospitalization and medical expenses arising as a result of injuries from an accident, medical transportation (including rental or air ambulance, if required), hotel expenses (maximum of 10 days), non-hospital pharmaceutical costs resulting from accident or illness, accidental death and the repatriation of the body to the country of origin, legal and administrative assistance after an accident, including in case of loss of documents, dental costs and other services such as translation to English, Portuguese and French.
The policy covers medical expenditures up to $7,000, and if the visitor needs to be transferred to another medical center, overseas transportation up to $40,000 will be provided. The insurance also contains $20,000 in coverage if a visitor dies while in Panama.
