Located near the pueblo of Boquete, called The Valley of Eternal Spring and named by Modern Maturity, International Living, and other magazines as one of the top five retirement communities in the world, this large, tropical home, within easy view of 11,000-foot Volcan Baru (a dormant volcano and highest point in Panama) is being offered at a bargain price. The owners are motivated to build again on a nearby "family" ranch.

The house is part of Brisas Boquetenas, a residential development just 15 minutes by excellent paved highway to the colorful central park of Boquete where one can find most small town amenities, including excellent restaurants, hotels, inns, and hostels. Among the annual highlights in Boquete are flower and orchid fairs which attract world-wide attention, as well as patriotic and holiday festivals and parades. Boquete is also a destination for the outdoors-minded person, offering everything from hiking and bird watching to river rafting and rain forest expeditions.

The elevation at Brisas Boquetenas is about 3,400 feet above sea leavel, ideal for open-window and terrace living. No heat or air conditioning is needed, whereas in the hills above Boquete, heat may be required, while downhill in David, air conditioning is a necessity.

A 30-minute drive in the other direction on the same highway will bring you to David, Panama's second largest city, a colorful and bustling Latin mini-metropolis offering most urban amenities such as hospitals, an international airport, American-style shopping centers, specialty and craft stores, major car dealerships, and numerous cultural events. David also hosts the Chiriqui Provincial Fair, rated by many as the equal of state fairs in the United States, but obviously with a Latin flair.

Spanish, of course, is the national language, but many in Panama speak at least some English and all Panamanians seem eager to communicate with a big smile, handshake, and their best "Spanglish." One of the best features of Panama is their people. If you give them a smile, they will return you a big smile. They like "gringos."

This house, which is the Development's largest model named "Belleza" (which means "beautiful"), sits stately on a rise where Volcan Baru is easily visible from the full-length rear terrace and the lights of David can be seen from the kitchen windows at night. The 810 square meter property lot is entirely planted with lush tropical landscaping, visible from every window, and located in a friendly neighborhood filled with retired ex-patriates from the USA, Canada, and Britain, as well as some Panamanian families.

The owners have added many custom-designed features to the home, not the least of which is the kitchen. All the cabinets were also custom built and include a pull-out, double-decked spice and condiment drawer, display shelves, and a slide-out trash bin. Countertops were designed and built with porcelain tiles, and the highlight is a massive, tiled range hood with an outside vent. The double sink is ivory-colored porcelain, featuring top quality brushed steel faucets and hardware (on a par with Moen, not available in Panama) and a waste disposal unit. Also built-in is a Frigidaire dishwasher.

The Dining Room is roomy, light, separated from the kitchen by a counter and from the Living Room by a handsome arch and columns. The Living Room is also roomy and opens onto the rear terrace with double doors and mountain views. The floor tile patterns, both interior and exterior, were all designed by a professional interior decorator.

The master bedroom also opens onto the rear terrace with mountain views and contains a tiled jacuzzi bath nook next to the master bath. All three bedrooms and the hallway feature attractive, floor-to-ceiling cedar built-in closets, with the two secondary bedroom closets containing built-in dressers. All feature modern and upscale door and drawer pulls.

The laundry room accommodates a full-size washer and dryer, a 40-gallon gas hot water heater and room for tools, cleaning supplies, and garden implements. It opens out onto a covered portico adjoining the rear terrace with easy access to the back yard, an owner-added feature to the Belleza model.

In summary, the owners have invested about $40,000 of their own money to upgrade interior and exterior fixtures and tastefully landscape the property, striving to achieve a standard that is pleasing to the eye, easy and efficient as a place to live, and satisfying in all ways as a comfortable home.

As a matter of interest, the lots on either side and to the rear are still available for sale, should one desire to have a large and private estate-sized property right in the middle of the best and friendliest neighborhood around.

But please take note! Even with the growing popularity and rising prices in Boquete real estate, the asking price of $195,000, for now, makes this property the "BEST BUY" in the area.
